Yes. There is free VJ software worth using, and some of it is very good. The catch is that “free” means different things: free forever with limits, free to try, free for personal projects, or free if you can write code.

Here’s what each kind gets you, starting with ours.

## What Visibox gives you for free

Visibox is a visual sample player for live music. You load clips, images, and backing tracks into songs, then trigger them in time with your set. The Free Plan is yours forever: five songs with five clips each, stereo backing tracks, color clips, and triggering from your keyboard and mouse, with a watermark on the output.

Every new activation also starts with a 14-day Pro trial that unlocks the rest: unlimited songs and clips, MIDI and Stream Deck control, audio-reactive visualizers, stackable effects, cameras, and multichannel backing tracks. There’s no credit card, so when the trial ends nothing is charged. You drop back to the Free Plan.

## Other free VJ software worth knowing

### projectM

[projectM](https://github.com/projectM-visualizer/projectm) is a free, open-source music visualizer, a modern rebuild of Winamp’s MilkDrop. It plays the huge library of MilkDrop presets on Windows, macOS, and Linux. It does one thing well: visuals that react to sound. There is no clip triggering and no backing tracks.

### Hydra

[Hydra](https://hydra.ojack.xyz/) is a free, open-source tool for live coding visuals in your browser. You type short lines of code and the picture changes as you go, a bit like patching a modular synth. A joy if you like code, and a steep start if you don’t.

### TouchDesigner Non-Commercial

[TouchDesigner](https://derivative.ca/) is a node-based environment for building generative and interactive visuals. Its Non-Commercial edition is free for personal, non-commercial use, with images capped at 1280×1280. Very powerful, and a real learning project.

### Resolume demo

The [Resolume](https://resolume.com/) demo is the full app with nothing locked. The catch is a watermark on the output and a robotic voice that reminds you now and then which software you are using. The voice is what keeps it off the stage: great for learning, not for the show. Our [Visibox vs Resolume](/visibox-vs-resolume) comparison goes deeper.

Checked against each project’s own site in October 2026.

## Visibox fits when

- You play music and want clips, images, and backing tracks behind your set, fired by you during the show.
- You want to try every feature before paying anything. The 14-day Pro trial needs no credit card.
- A short set is enough for now. Five songs with five clips each covers it on the Free Plan.
- You'd rather perform tonight than spend a month learning a VJ app.

## Something else fits when

- You only want visuals that react to music, free forever. projectM plays thousands of MilkDrop presets at no cost.
- You enjoy writing code. Hydra runs in your browser and turns a few lines into live visuals.
- You want to build generative systems from scratch for personal projects. TouchDesigner Non-Commercial is free up to 1280×1280.
- You are learning projection mapping and can live with a watermark for now. The Resolume demo is the full app.

## Choosing between them

If you are a musician who wants visuals behind your set and plans to run them yourself, start with Visibox: the Free Plan to see whether it clicks, and the Pro trial to see everything it can do. If you only want something that dances to the music, projectM is hard to beat for free. If you would rather code than click, open Hydra. If you want to build from nothing, learn TouchDesigner.

Still weighing paid options too? Our guide to [concert visuals software](/concert-visuals-software) covers what to look for.

## Common questions

### Is Visibox really free?

The Free Plan is free forever, with limits: 5 clips per song, 5 songs per project, keyboard and mouse triggering, stereo backing tracks, and a watermark on the output. Every new activation also starts with a 14-day Pro trial that unlocks everything, with no credit card.

### Is there a watermark?

Yes, on the Free Plan and during the Pro trial. Any Pro plan removes it.

### What happens when the Pro trial ends?

Visibox switches to the Free Plan. Nothing is charged, because the trial never asked for a card.

### Which free option makes audio-reactive visuals?

projectM, for free and forever. Visibox has audio-reactive ISF and MilkDrop visualizers too, in the 14-day Pro trial and Pro plans, where they sit alongside your clips and backing tracks.

### Does Visibox run on Mac and Windows?

Yes. macOS 12 (Monterey) or later, and Windows 10 or later.

Download Visibox for free.

Try every Pro feature free for 14 days. No credit card. After the trial, the Free Plan is yours forever.
